Having grown up in Japan, I found gun violence in the U.S.—its enormity, senselessness and violence, particularly of mass shootings—impossible to fathom. Shootings were happening all around us, from supermarkets to places of worship to classrooms, with seemingly no end in sight. And as I had children, I became haunted every morning by the fear that the kiss goodbye in front of the school gates could be the last.
Parkland, Florida, joined the ever-growing list of communities to come under siege in February 2018. But in the aftermath were glimmers of hope, as students and families refused to let their stories be forgotten, determined to channel their searing pain and rage to fuel change.
